Home Occupations
A home occupation is classified under Use Type 116 in the Ordinance as an accessory commercial use allowed in a dwelling unit where the occupation, profession, activity or use is clearly a customary, incidental, and secondary use of a residential dwelling unit that does not alter the exterior of the property or affect the character of the neighborhood. Home occupations are prohibited in the RCL, CC, I, and OBP zoning districts.
A home occupation must be conducted entirely within a dwelling or entirely within an accessory structure located on the same lot as the principal dwelling. A home occupation may not exceed 200 square feet in residential and mixed use districts and may not exceed 500 square feet in the RPD and RSC zoning districts. No more than two outside employees may be employed or report to work at the site of a home occupation in the residential and mixed use districts. No more than three outside employees may be employed or report to the site in the RPD and RSC zones.
Funeral homes, motor vehicle repair, boat repair, auto body work, and food and beverage sales are prohibited as home occupations. Other uses that do not meet the standards as a customary, incidental, and secondary use of a residential dwelling unit may also be prohibited. (See §51.3.116 for additional requirements.)
